The UHI effect drives city temperatures up to 15°F higher than surrounding areas, causing a massive spike in A/C demand and skyrocketing energy bills across California.
Excess heat and the hidden moisture it often brings degrade roofs and compromise building longevity, leading to expensive, unexpected repairs that impact the value of California properties
This heat strains California's electrical grid, exacerbates pollution, and harms the most vulnerable populations in our communities, creating pressure on businesses to act.

Request our complimentary, advanced thermal imaging service. Our drone technology will scan your California roof to pinpoint hidden areas of excess heat retention, moisture intrusion, and energy loss. (A $500–$1,000 value, free for California Building Owners.)
Receive a detailed, actionable report with clear recommendations. This report is your proof of need and is required to qualify for our exclusive state-backed grants.
We'll help you use your report to apply for California-specific heat mitigation and energy efficiency grants, which can cover up to 50% of the cost for cool roofing repairs, restoration, or full replacement!

The Urban Climate Initiative is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping California commercial building owners combat the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. We provide advanced thermal diagnostics and help owners navigate state-funded grant programs to make energy-efficient upgrades affordable.
This occurs when cities replace natural land cover with dense concentrations of pavement, buildings, and other surfaces that absorb and retain heat. This can make urban areas up to 15°F hotter than surrounding rural areas, leading to higher energy costs and structural wear on buildings.
Qualified California building owners can often secure state-backed grants that cover up to 50% of the cost for cool roofing repairs, restoration, or full replacements.
The Extreme Heat and Community Resilience Program (EHCRP) is a state initiative designed to protect communities from rising temperatures. The Urban Climate Initiative helps you align your building upgrades with these program requirements to maximize your funding eligibility.
Our mission is to lower the barrier to heat mitigation. Our initial thermal drone scans—a value of $500 to $1,000—are provided free of charge to qualified California building owners.
We use state-of-the-art drone technology equipped with thermal imaging sensors to scan your roof. This non-invasive process identifies "hot spots," moisture intrusion, and areas where energy is escaping, which are often invisible to the naked eye.
